[You do you]:Your December is different to mine

the-month-december

So for many when they think of December, it conjures memories of Christmas, however that’s not always the case for those who identify as a different religion like myself. I identify as Pagan and therefore December is Yule time – or Winter Solstice if you will. The Winter Solstice is celebrated on the longest night of the year, this years being the 21st of December and is the ‘Festival of Rebirth and Return of the Sun’.

Traditions

As with most holidays and religions traditions vary depending on the person; some may choose to celebrate Yule with bonfires, the burning of the traditional Yule log and prayers in a coven. However some like myself choose to celebrate alone at home. Many Pagans I know choose to incorporate traditional “Christmas” decorations in their celebrations such as mistletoe, the tree, holly, wreaths and such this is because these are important and each have symbolism that to others may be unknown.

How I celebrate

Since I live with my partner who is not Pagan, and celebrates Christmas a compromise was made. We chose to incorporate aspects of both our traditions into our own. We have a tree, simply decorated but no other decorations, on the 21st we exchange one gift each (or something else depending on what we agreed) then the rest on the 25th, we have special meals on both days and before bed on the 21st I light a candle, some incense and do my prayers and wishes for the next year. It’s simple, but it’s ours.

yule

I read something whilst researching Yule that interested me and wanted to share it:

“Above all, Yuletide is a Celebration of the Return of the Light, the promise fulfilled of Light birthing out of Darkness.
It is a time to share Love and Celebrate with our community of Family and Friends.
And the Wheel Turns…”*

Whether you celebrate Yule, Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, at the end of the day it’s a time to be with those you love.

What comes to mind when you think of December and what traditions do you follow/celebrate?

Winter/Holidays Tag

So Winter is here and to be perfectly honest it is not one of my favourite months, everything outside is cold, wet and dark. But lets not focus on the bad things after all with cold comes snuggly blankets, jumpers, scraves, hot beverages and candles.

Questions!

Most worn winter clothing piece?

My most worn winter piece is my cat print scarf or my fluffy bedtime socks

Favourite winter scent/candle?

I love anything spiced over winter so like apple cinnamon or cherry cinnamon are usually my favourite (the latter I have a candle for)

Favourite winter beverage?

Ooh difficult, erm spiced apple tea, vanilla americano or mint hot chocolate =^.^=

All time favourite Christmas/holiday movie?

The Grinch, followed very closely my A Nightmare before Christmas

Favourite holiday food/treat?

I adore gingerbread in the winter, usually alongside a vanilla or hazelnut americano =^.^=

What is your method on deciding what to give friends/family at Christmas time?

I try to think about things they might want, need or like but if all else fails I just ask them.

What’s at the top of your wish list?

I really want more replica Harry Potter wands or possibly get a Fantastic Beast replica wand. I’m also trying to get all the Harry Potter pops and vault books so I’d be happy with those too 🙂

Is your Christmas tree real or fake?

It’s fake, the smell of real ones would drive my cat crazy and she’d destroy it, plus too much cleanup once it dies.

What are your plans for the holidays this year?

Yule on the 21st which I’ll spend with my partner, then probably go for dinner at my mothers since my partner is working christmas day then celebrate with him another day 🙂

What makes the holidays special for you?

It’s Yule which is a special time, but other than that I don’t have a reason.

Where would you really love to spend Christmas one year?

I would really LOVE to spend it either in Japan or New York, I think both would be amazing.

[You do you]: “Do more of what you love”

Life is stressful, everyone knows this. But as I said in [New Series] “You do you: Take care of yourself”, all you can do is – do what makes you happy, spend time on yourself everyday and stop trying to please others. Easier said than done I know but sometimes the way to a happier you is literally having “no f**ks to give” in regards to what others think about you.

Something that continues to annoy me is being constantly told I’m too old to obsess over things like Harry Potter or Disney but at the end of the day nothing makes me happier than curling into bed or up on the sofa with my HP pjs, drinking a tea or coffee from my Hedwig or one of my special Disney mugs and watching a film.; be it Disney, Studio Ghibli or other. And why should what other people’s opinion on what is “appropriate” for my age matter? It doesn’t. Everyone needs an outlet, or two, or many to get away from the stresses of the dreaded ADULTING. So whether you enjoy knitting, painting, reading. learning a new language or like me collecting and obsessing over all things Disney, Harry Potter and Ghibli – you do you.

Porridge with maple syrup and bananas, fresh blueberries and strawberries and tea

Following on from what I was talking about above, another thing that is brought up often is my lifestyle. I dress how I feel; some days that’s a graphic tee and leggings other days it’s a gothic dress with platforms, I live for matte lipsticks usually in strange colours and I’m covered in tattoos and piercings, my house is plain but “geek chic” and I workout 4-5 days a week although I still haven’t given up junk food (something I need to work on) and you know what that’s just me. Your appearance, choice of decor and lifestyle shouldn’t define you as a person, instead choose to do things that make you happy (within reason of course if it’s illegal I’d stay clear lol).

Overwhelmed with uni work on a Friday night #studentlife

Career. It’s the big one that “adults” like to bring up often. I’m unemployed. Something most will remind me often. However I chose to go back to uni to get my Masters and that takes up a lot of my time, my MA is in a field that most consider “dead-end” (Fine Art) but I chose it for me and my end goal. Same goes for blogging, others tell me it will go nowhere but I do it because I enjoy engaging with others, writing and exploring new things, not for followers or views (although I’m grateful for them) and especially not for money. Pick a career YOU love, not something that others deem a “good” career choice; if you want to be a lawyer go to uni and study law, you’re happy working in retail, a coffee shop or being self-employed good for you, same goes for those stay at home parents. Don’t settle for a job because others say you have to, instead work hard and go for your dreams whatever those may be.

In the end you can’t please everyone but one person you can always ensure is happy is yourself, you give yourself more stress trying to be what others want than being yourself, so why continue trying to do so?
